Make internal links useful
An internal link connects pages on the same website. It helps visitors find their next relevant answer and can help search engines discover pages. Link count alone is not a quality measure. A clear anchor and suitable destination are more useful than repeating the same search phrase everywhere.
What to do
- Link from a relevant explanation to a page that develops the topic. Use ordinary anchor elements with href values pointing to destinations.
- Write anchor text that explains the target. For image links, provide suitable alternative text. Assess the name in its context.
- Check local fragments such as #prices against actual IDs. Open destinations manually when their HTTP status needs verification.
Example
<a href="/service/">See what bicycle servicing includes</a>
<a href="#prices">Jump to prices</a>
<h2 id="prices">Prices</h2>Check for yourself
- Can visitors predict the destination?
- Does the fragment target exist?
- Can important pages be reached through ordinary internal links?
